Named after the ancient Greek goddess of love and beauty, legend has it that Aphrodite was born off the coast of Cythera. Also known as Venus in Roman mythology, she is famously depicted in Botticelli’s stunning masterpiece, emerging from the sea on a giant scallop shell.
